Apple unveils iPad mini with 8.5-inch OLED display and A20 Pro chip

On October 26, 2026, Apple published a press release introducing what it calls the biggest update ever to the iPad mini. The headline changes are an OLED display, a much faster chip, water and dust resistance, and new wireless silicon.
The display grows to 8.5 inches and is OLED (Apple calls it Super Retina XDR), yet the tablet keeps the same footprint as the previous mini thanks to 24 percent thinner bezels. Apple quotes peak brightness of up to 1200 nits, more than 2x the previous generation, 600 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and a 1-nit minimum brightness. It supports the P3 wide color gamut. A new nano-texture option, which Apple says users love on iPad Pro, is meant to reduce glare.
The body is 5.4 mm thin, and Apple says it is thinner and lighter than the previous generation without giving a comparison figure. It comes in two finishes, midnight and starlight, and carries an IP67 rating. An "Acoustic Display" pairs specially designed woofers with the display for punchier bass and more volume, with custom tweeters hidden between the glass and the aluminum enclosure; its sealed enclosure helps the device reach IP67. The 12MP Center Stage front camera now sits on the landscape edge. The 12MP Wide back camera does Smart HDR 4 and 4K video at up to 60 fps, and an Adaptive True Tone flash is meant to improve document scanning.
Inside is the A20 Pro, built on Apple's 2-nanometer process with a new package inspired by M-series chips. It has a 7-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core and up to a 6-core CPU. Apple claims up to 4.5x faster AI performance than the previous generation, up to 2.7x graphics performance (with dynamic caching and hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing), up to 60 percent faster multithreaded CPU performance and over a 2x increase in unified memory bandwidth. The 512GB configuration adds a Dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the processing power of the previous generation; by engaging all 32 cores, Apple says, A20 Pro handles more advanced on-device AI workloads. Apple names running on-device models in creative apps and running local LLMs among the use cases, and cites apps such as Draw Things and Detail.
Connectivity moves to Apple's own chips. The N1 wireless chip enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread and is said to improve performance on 5GHz Wi-Fi and the reliability of AirDrop and AirPlay. Cellular models get the C2 modem system, with up to 50 percent faster cellular data speeds than the previous iPad mini and better power efficiency. eSIM is supported, and fast charging is included.
The tablet ships with iPadOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Siri AI, which Apple describes as an entirely new version of Siri, is rolling out in beta. It can draw on personal context across messages, emails and photos, use onscreen awareness to act on what is on the display, and answer questions on virtually any topic. The mini also supports Apple's most advanced on-device model ever, for more expressive Siri voices and more accurate systemwide dictation. Other additions include upgraded Clean Up, Spatial Reframing and Extend for photos, an all-new Image Playground app with photorealistic imagery, and Notify Me in Safari to watch pages for changes such as restocks or price drops. Apple says that when Private Cloud Compute handles a request, personal data is not stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else. iPadOS 27 also adds a Liquid Glass slider in Settings, from ultraclear to fully tinted. Extended display mode with an external display arrives with iPadOS 27.2.
Accessories include a new two-panel Smart Folio in TechWoven fabric (navy blue and taupe) and support for both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro. On the environment, Apple says the mini is made with 35 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery, and is manufactured with 40 percent renewable energy across the supply chain.
Customers can pre-order the iPad mini and Smart Folio starting Wednesday, October 28, with availability beginning Friday, November 6. Dave Pakula, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the new mini is "a huge leap forward for users who love having the full iPad experience in the palm of their hand."

Why it matters
Apple frames this as the biggest update ever to its smallest iPad, and the list backs the claim: a switch to OLED, a 2-nanometer chip, water and dust protection, and Apple-designed N1 and C2 networking silicon, all in a body that keeps the previous footprint. The AI angle is explicit. Apple pitches the A20 Pro's Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and, on the 512GB model, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine as hardware for on-device models and local LLMs, and pairs it with Siri AI, which it describes as an entirely new version of Siri, in beta on iPadOS 27.
Who it affects
Apple describes the mini's audience as creators and small business owners, doctors, field service workers and gamers. It points to specific uses: reading by the pool or working outside on a rainy day (IP67), pilots checking an electronic flight bag in dim light, creatives and technicians who want less glare (nano-texture option), and people running AI tasks or local LLMs on the device. Owners of the previous iPad mini are the natural comparison point, since most of Apple's figures are measured against it. Parents get a mention too, through tools to manage what kids can see, who they can talk to and when they can use apps.
How to use it
Pre-orders for the iPad mini and the new Smart Folio open Wednesday, October 28, with availability from Friday, November 6. The mini comes in midnight and starlight; the Smart Folio comes in navy blue and taupe. It works with both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro. Anyone who wants the Dual 16-core Neural Engine needs the 512GB configuration. Cellular models carry the C2 modem and support eSIM. Siri AI arrives in beta with iPadOS 27, and extended display mode for an external display needs iPadOS 27.2. No price is given in the visible text.
How solid is it
This is Apple's own press release, so the specifications and dates come straight from the manufacturer. The performance numbers are Apple's own "up to" claims against the previous generation: up to 4.5x AI, up to 2.7x graphics, up to 60 percent multithreaded CPU, over 2x memory bandwidth. The visible text names no third-party benchmarks or reviews. Apple's statement that Private Cloud Compute requests are not stored or made accessible to Apple or anyone else is likewise Apple's description of its own system.
Risks and caveats
Siri AI is described as rolling out in beta, and the visible text does not say which countries get it or when the beta ends. The headline neural-engine upgrade is tied to the 512GB configuration, and other storage configurations are not listed in the visible text. Extended display mode is not there at launch but comes with iPadOS 27.2. RAM size and battery capacity or life are not given. The 5.4 mm thickness has no numeric comparison with the previous model, and no weight figure appears; the text says only thinner and lighter. The release's footnotes are referenced, but their content is not in the visible text.
“With a remarkably thinner and lighter design, a stunning new OLED display, the incredibly powerful A20 Pro, and water and dust resistance, the new iPad mini is a huge leap forward for users who love having the full iPad experience in the palm of their hand.”
