DOE launches Genesis-Science-1, its first open-weight science model

The U.S. Department of Energy, working with industry partner Arcee, launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative and unveiled Genesis-Science-1, DOE's first open-weight foundation model built for scientific research. The 2026 program runs two scheduled contribution tracks, and organizations may apply to both when their proposed contributions are distinct.

The portal is seeking material across several stages of model development: foundation-stage contributions such as scientific text, code, documentation and structured technical collections for pretraining or context extension; and post-training contributions such as expert demonstrations, annotated task examples, research software, datasets, workflow environments, reinforcement-learning tasks, held-out evaluations, scoring rubrics and verifiers. The program also wants scientists and engineers to review tasks, model behavior and completed artifacts, and it will take rolling inquiries from infrastructure providers about additional training or evaluation capacity. Applicants must identify the relevant track, describe the scientific work and its importance, state what material is ready, name the experts available to support it, and set out proposed terms of use. The public application form itself collects only descriptions and metadata; no scientific material changes hands during the application step, and each contributor specifies how its own material may be handled. Applications go through a DOE-governed review with input from academic, national laboratory and industry partners, passing through five gates: scientific fit, rights and handling, expert and evaluation readiness, technical integration, and final program selection. Contributors selected through this process will work with the researchers building and evaluating Genesis Open Models, get early evaluation access as the system develops, and be credited in the technical report and release materials.

Arcee is named as the first industry partner supporting the open-weights program and co-developed Genesis-Science-1. Arcee is a U.S. open-model lab that builds open-weight foundation models end to end, covering data preparation, architecture, pretraining, post-training, evaluation and deployment; its existing Trinity model family ranges from compact models meant for local use up to Trinity Large, a 400-billion-parameter sparse mixture-of-experts model. DOE describes the intent as giving researchers, national laboratories, industry partners and the open science community transparent, extensible AI models that can be adapted across scientific domains including materials discovery, energy systems, earth systems modeling, fusion, biology and high-energy physics.
