Rivian prices Autonomy+ self-driving, eyes Level 4 by 2030

IEEE Spectrum rode along as a Rivian R1S SUV drove itself through Palo Alto, California, with a company test driver behind the wheel and Nick Nguyen, the engineer who directs Rivian's autonomy products and programs, watching from the back seat. The route passed near Stanford, where computer science professor Sebastian Thrun's team won a $2 million DARPA Grand Challenge in 2005, driving a Volkswagen SUV named Stanley across 212 kilometers of Mojave Desert with no human intervention, the first vehicle ever to finish the course unmanned. Two decades later, Rivian's own system is that project's descendant.
The system is called Autonomy+, and it works point-to-point: a driver enters an address and the SUV drives itself to any mapped destination in the U.S. and Canada. Those chips run what Rivian calls its Large Driving Model, an end-to-end neural network that processes hundreds of trillions of operations per second and turns raw sensor data directly into steering, braking and acceleration commands, rather than passing it through separate detection, prediction and decision-making stages. Rivian calls the refinement loop its data flywheel: the system currently ingests cloud data from up to 125,000 cars for analysis, validation and simulation-based fine-tuning, with owners required to explicitly opt in to data collection beforehand and updated models delivered back to cars through monthly over-the-air updates. Rivian, like some rivals, no longer needs to fully rely on an onboard high-definition map or a cellular link to locate the car.
Behind Autonomy+ sits a broader bid for Level 4. Rivian holds $1.25 billion in backing from Uber toward fielding a fleet of Level 4 robotaxis starting in 2028. RJ Scaringe, Rivian's MIT-doctorate founder and chief executive, says showroom Rivians will start adopting some of the robotaxi fleet's Level 4 capabilities, perhaps beginning with self-parking, no later than 2030. Competitor numbers, Tesla's about 1.6 million vehicles sold and 1.1 million FSD users, Toyota's more than 11 million vehicles, and Waymo's claimed 92 percent reduction in serious accidents over 220 million miles, are all attributed to those companies' own reporting rather than audited externally. One detail is genuinely unclear from the article itself: it states a $1.25 billion Uber figure twice, once as backing for the 2028 Level 4 robotaxi fleet and once as the value of a March deal to supply up to 50,000 robotaxis, without saying whether the two references describe the same transaction or two separate figures that happen to match.
Risks and caveats
